Finding A 7" Head

The only "ready made" head that might have a chance to fit the Dixie is one made by Remo. I'm trying it and will let you know what happens.

The model number is M6-R715-S4-SD003. It's a conga head, so the "collar" might be too deep. But, I measured the Dixie and it looks like there's a maximum of ~1 inch of play in the tensioner.

This head measures 7.15" and the Dixie requires a 7".

Keep your fingers crossed. I'll post my results.

  1. Thanks for the blog. Lots of great info. I've been playing uke for about a year and just found one of these Dixies for $5 at a garage sale. It's in bad condition but I'm committed to bringing it back to playability. Maybe even a re-chroming if all the planets align. My biggest fear is replacing the ripped head. Did this conga model work for you?

  2. Hey Joe! I never got to try it. When I ordered it from Columbus Percussion, they notified me that it would be a special order. Evidently the factory makes certain models only upon pre-order. I had the time to wait, but figured that I'd be off doing something other than Dixie banjolele's by the time it came in.

Marvin Walker (http://www.banjomaker.net/) has a large assortment of Dixie banjolele parts (bodies, necks, heads, tuning gear). Contact him directly and see if he can help you find what you need.

    Hope this helps.
